September 25, 1984: Kurt falls in love with Black Flag's "Damaged II" from a mixtape Buzz Osbourne made for him. ![]() Kurt sells his record collection to see Black Flag live at the Mountaineers in Seattle with Buzz and Matt Lukin. (Green River is also on the bill. |
September 21, 1990:Dave Grohl flies to Seattle to audition for Nirvana. |
September 22, 1990: Nirvana plays one of their best shows in Seattle, at the Motor Sports International Garage with Dan Peters on drums. It's Dan's only show with Nirvana. Dave Grohl was in the audience. ![]() |

September 10, 1991: Smells Like Teen Spirit is released commercially to record stores. |
September 13, 1991: Nirvana gets thrown out of their own record release party at Re-bar in Seattle for starting a food fight. |
September 16, 1991: Nirvana does an in-store performance at Beehive records in Seattle. ![]() About 300 kids were inside the store, while another few hundred watched from outside. Members of Soundgarden showed up, but turnerd around because it was too crowded. |

September 24, 1991: Nevermind is released, the album the changed the face of the music industry and brought the underground to the mainstream. |
September 28, 1991: Nirvana plays the Marquee Club in New York and does an in-store at Tower Records during the day. And just four days after the release of Nevermind, they have a top 20 hit when "Smells Like Teen Spirit" bolts up 10 positions on Billboards Modern Rock Tracks chart to No.17. |
September 9, 1992: At the MTV Video Music Awards, Kurt starts strumming the first few bars of "Rape Me" live on Tv, the network executives collectivly cringed, fearing the song's lyrics were not acceptable for mainstream America. ![]() The band quickly went into "Lithium." This was also the night of the imfamous Axl Rose incident, where Kurt and Courtney jokingly asked Axl to be the godfater of Frances, and Axl's supermodel girlfriend ask Courtney if she was a model. Courtney's response? "Are you a brain surgeon? Kurt gets the last and best word when Axl tells him to shut his bitch up, and Kurt turns to Courtney and says "Shut up Bitch." ![]() This was also the night Kurt and Eddie Vedder danced together under the stage. Also Krist threw his Bass in the air and it smashes him in the head. |
September 10, 1992: Nirvana performs at a benefit concert at Portland Meadows Racetrack for the "No On 9" campaign, to protest Oregon's Initiative 9, which would limit Gay Rights. The benefit raised $25,000. |
September 11, 1992: The band plays a triumphent show at The Seattle Center Colliseum with Fits of Depression opening. |
September 26, 1992: Kurt joins Sonic Youth onstage at their show in Valencia California. He performs "Where Did You Sleep Lastnight" solo, then joins Mudhoney on guitar for "The Money Will Roll Right In." |
September 2, 1993: Nirvana take home the award for the Best Alternative Video for "In Bloom" at the MTV Video Music Awards |
September 7, 1993: The "Heart-Shaped Box" single, backed with "Milk It" and "Marigold" ships to radio. ![]() |
September 14,1993: A limited run of 25,000 copies of "In Utero" on clear vinyl is released. |
September 18, 1993: "Heart-Shaped Box" debuts at No.7 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart. Nevermind re-enters the Billboard 200 at No.188. |
September 21, 1993: In Utero is released on CD, and Wal-mart isn't carrying the album because of the fetuses on the back cover and because of the song title "Rape Me." |
September 23, 1993: Nirvana has rehersals for their second and last apperance on "Saturday Night Live. |
